English Cocker Spaniel

From Great Britain

The English Cocker Spaniel was originally used for flushing woodcock and grouse (and called the "cocking spaniel"). Nowadays it is amongst the most popular spaniel breeds. This breed, which is smaller than the English Springer Spaniel, was bred to excel in working in thick underbush. Today there are two lines of English Cocker Spaniels: working and show cockers, the latter being somewhat heavier and sturdier.

Purpose

The English Cocker Spaniel is a very old English flushing dog. Today Cocker Spaniels are versatile dogs suited for various hobbies and companionship.

Temperament & Behaviour

The typical English Cocker Spaniel is outgoing, lively, friendly and people-loving – an unrivalled companion dog!

Health

The English Cocker Spaniel is a relatively healthy dog breed.

The ears of a Cocker are often said to be tedious to care for, but in reality they are easier than the reputation. When properly cared for, they are as carefree as those of any other breed.

Grooming

The basic care of the Cocker Spaniel includes regular combing, washing and trimming of the coat. It is washed whenever it feels dirty. The coat should be sorted out weekly, depending on the quality of the coat (in many dark dogs, a couple of times a week) and trimmed 4-8 times a year, depending on the quality and length of the coat.

Regular trimming of the coat will help to keep the coat easy to maintain.

What Type Of Person Is the English Cocker Spaniel Suitable For?

The English Cocker Spaniel wants to be involved in the family’s daily life. It loves the outdoors and is a good companion for a wide range of hobbies.
